One of the best things about drive-in camping is that you can enjoy delicious meals without sacrificing comfort or convenience. Take your car, RV, or trailer and park it at a designated campsite with amenities like water, electricity, and fire pits. You don’t need to worry about packing light or carrying heavy backpacks. You can bring your favorite ingredients and cookware and use the campfire or a portable stove to whip up some tasty dishes. Below are some of my camping recipe favorites when spending time outdoors.
Breakfast Recipe Favorites
One of the best parts of camping is waking up to a hearty breakfast that fuels you for the day ahead. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, there are plenty of drive-in camping recipe favorites that you can make with simple ingredients and tools. Here are some of mine:
For some protein and flavor, you can’t go wrong with bacon, sausage or ham. You can cook them in a skillet over medium-high heat until crisp and browned or wrap them in foil and cook them over the fire. You can also cut them into bite-sized pieces and add them to your scrambled eggs, omelets, or breakfast burritos.
Scrambled eggs are easy to make and versatile to customize.
You just need eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and cheese if you like.
Whisk everything together in a bowl and pour into a hot skillet. Stir gently with a spatula until the eggs are cooked to your liking.
You can also add some chopped veggies, herbs, or meat for extra flavor and nutrition.
Omelets are similar to scrambled eggs but more elegant and fluffy. You can make them in a skillet or in a ziplock bag for easy cleanup. To make them in a skillet, whisk two eggs with some water or milk and season with salt and pepper. Pour into a hot skillet and tilt to spread evenly. As the eggs set, lift the edges and let the uncooked egg run underneath. When almost set, add your fillings of choice on one half of the omelet and fold over the other half. Slide onto a plate and enjoy.
To make them in a ziplock bag, crack two eggs into a quart-sized freezer bag and add some water or milk and seasonings. Seal the bag and shake well to mix. Add your fillings and squeeze out as much air as possible. Place the bag in a pot of boiling water and cook for 13 to 15 minutes or until firm. Cut open the bag and slide out your omelet.
Breakfast burritos are a great way to wrap up all your favorite breakfast ingredients in a tortilla. You can make them ahead of time and reheat them at your campsite, or make them fresh on the spot.
You’ll need some tortillas, eggs, cheese, salsa, and any other fillings you like, such as bacon, sausage, ham, beans, potatoes, peppers, onions, or mushrooms.
Cook your eggs and fillings in a skillet and spoon them onto the center of each tortilla. Sprinkle with cheese and salsa and fold the bottom edge over the filling, then fold in the sides and roll up. You can wrap them in foil and heat them over the fire or in a skillet, or eat them cold.
Pancakes are a classic breakfast staple that you can easily make at your campsite.
You can use a premade pancake mix or make your own from scratch with flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, milk, eggs, and oil.
Cook them on a griddle or skillet over medium-high heat until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook for another minute or two.
Serve with butter, maple syrup, jam, or fresh fruit.
Another sweet option is french toast, which is made by dipping bread slices in a mixture of eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
You can use any kind of bread you like, but stale bread works best as it absorbs more liquid.
Cook the bread on a greased skillet over medium heat until golden and crisp on both sides.
Top with powdered sugar, whipped cream, berries, or nutella.
Nothing beats a warm slice of coffee cake with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning.
You can make this easy recipe in a cast iron skillet over a campfire or on a camp stove.
Just mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, butter, milk, and eggs in a large bowl. Then pour the batter into a greased skillet and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
Cover with foil and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
If you want to treat yourself to something decadent, try campfire cinnamon rolls.
You’ll need a tube of refrigerated cinnamon roll dough.
Unwrap and place the dough in a seasoned dutch oven with some melted butter. Bake for 10-12 minutes and cover with frosting and serve.
If you’re looking for a hearty and comforting breakfast, biscuits w/ sausage gravy is a perfect choice. You can make your own biscuits from scratch or use canned biscuit dough. Bake them in an oven or over a campfire until golden and flaky.
To make the gravy, cook some breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned and crumbly. Drain the excess fat and sprinkle some flour over the sausage. Stir well and cook for a few minutes.
Gradually whisk in some milk and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of cayenne if you like some spice. Split the biscuits and spoon the gravy over them.
Lunch/Dinner Recipe Favorites
You can make just about anything for lunch and dinner that you would at home. Here are some of my camping recipe favorites:

- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until slightly thickened.
- Add the beef, potatoes, carrots, bay leaf, and thyme, and simmer until the beef and vegetables are tender, about an hour.

Chili is another campfire staple that is easy to make and versatile. You can use ground beef or turkey, canned or dried beans, canned tomatoes or tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, onion, garlic, and optionally some cheese, sour cream, cilantro, or green onions for toppings. If you’re using dried beans, soak them overnight in water before cooking. In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook the onion and garlic until soft, then add the meat and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Drain any excess fat from the pot. Stir in the beans, tomatoes or tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the beans are tender and the chili is thickened, about an hour. Add the baked beans and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until heated through and slightly thickened, about 15 minutes. Serve your beans and franks with some bread or rolls.

You can use ground beef or turkey (or a vegetarian alternative), hamburger buns (or bread), cheese (optional), lettuce (optional), tomato (optional), onion (optional), pickle (optional), ketchup (optional), mustard (optional), mayonnaise (optional), salt, and pepper. Shape the meat into patties and season with salt and pepper. Cook them on a grill or a skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side or until done to your liking. If you’re using cheese, add it on top of the patties during the last minute of cooking and cover with a lid to melt it. Toast the buns on the grill or in a toaster if you have one. Assemble your burgers with your preferred toppings and condiments. Enjoy your juicy burgers with some fries or chips.

You can use any kind of hot dogs (or sausages) you like, hot dog buns (or bread), cheese (optional), relish (optional), onion (optional), ketchup (optional), mustard (optional), mayonnaise (optional), salt, and pepper. Assemble your hot dogs with your preferred toppings and condiments. Enjoy your hot dogs with some coleslaw or salad.

Cook for about 15 minutes per side or until the chicken is cooked through and the skin is crisp. Brush with barbecue sauce during the last few minutes of cooking and turn frequently to prevent burning.
Serve your BBQ chicken with some baked beans or potato salad.
Dessert Favorites
Just because you are camping doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good dessert after your meal. One of the best things about camping is enjoying a warm and delicious dessert by the fire. Give these time-honored camping recipe favorites a try.
This is one of the easiest and most versatile desserts you can make at a campsite. All you need is a cake mix, a can of pie filling, some butter, and a dutch oven. You can use any flavor of cake mix and pie filling you like, such as yellow cake with cherry filling, chocolate cake with peach filling, or spice cake with apple filling. To make the cobbler/dump cake, simply layer the cake mix and the pie filling in the dutch oven, dot with butter, and cover with the lid. Place the dutch oven over hot coals and bake for about 30 minutes or until the cake is golden and bubbly. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream if you have it.
Who says you can’t have cupcakes at a campsite? With a little creativity and some aluminum foil, you can bake cupcakes in an orange peel. This is a fun and easy way to make individual servings of cake that are moist and flavorful. You will need some oranges, a cake mix, water, oil, eggs, and a muffin tin. Cut the oranges in half and scoop out the pulp. Save the pulp for another use or eat it as a snack. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions and fill each orange peel halfway with batter. Wrap each orange peel in aluminum foil and place them in the muffin tin. Bake over hot coals for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Carefully unwrap the cupcakes and enjoy.

You can also add some peanut butter, Nutella, or jam for extra flavor.
To make smores, simply roast a marshmallow over the fire until it’s golden and gooey.
Then sandwich it between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate on one side.
Press gently to melt the chocolate and enjoy.
This simple and easy recipe only requires a few ingredients and can be made in a foil packet or a Dutch oven. Here’s how to make it:

- 4 large apples, cored
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- Optional: Raisins
- Optional: whipped cream, ice cream, or granola for topping
Directions:
- Place an apple on a piece of foil and fill core with cinnamon and brown sugar, raisins (if desired) and top with more butter.
- Wrap the apple in foil ensuring a good seal so none of the juices leak out.
- Place the apple on a grill over medium-high heat or on hot coals. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, turning once, until the apples are soft.
- Carefully open the foil and enjoy with your favorite toppings.
Alternatively, you can make this recipe in a Dutch oven by placing the apples and butter pieces in the pot and covering it with a lid. Place the pot over hot coals and cook for about 30-45 minutes, checking occasionally, until the apples are soft and bubbly.
This dessert is perfect for sharing with your camping buddies or enjoying by yourself. It’s sweet, warm, and comforting, just like camping should be.
That’s a wrap
I don’t know about you, but just putting together this article has gotten me craving these comfort foods. While I make versions of all these recipes at home, there is something about enjoying these meals while outdoors that just reminds me of my youth and simpler times.
